Garage door panel replacement and dent repair in the West Valley

Garage door panel replacement usually costs $250 to $1,000 per section installed, and many small dents are cosmetic and can be left alone. Replace one section when the damage stops at one or two sections and a matching panel is still made; once the cost nears half a new door, replace the door. In Arizona sun, expect a new panel to look brighter than the rest.

Is the dent cosmetic, or is the door damaged?

Most dents from a bumper, a bin or a ball only change how the door looks. Check these before you decide anything:

  • Does the door still open and close smoothly, without rubbing, popping or a stop partway?
  • Are the rollers on both sides still in their tracks?
  • Is any hinge, seam or the metal brace across the top section bent?
  • Is the bottom section bowed in, or pulled away from the cable bracket at either corner?

If the answer to the first two is yes and the rest no, the dent is cosmetic. If the door rubs, a roller is out or a corner is bent, stop using the door; see off track and cables for what’s safe to do.

Which section is which?

The four sections of a garage door, seen from inside the garage A typical seven-foot garage door made of four horizontal sections joined by hinges, with rollers at each end running in the tracks. The top section carries the opener arm bracket. The bottom section carries the lift cable brackets at each lower corner, where the cables from the springs attach, so replacing it means working against spring tension. A typical 7-foot door has four sections. They aren’t interchangeable: the top one carries the opener bracket and the bottom one the lift cable brackets, so a company orders by position as well as by model.

To order a section, a company needs the door’s maker and model, the section’s position, its width and its color. Many makers put a sticker with the model or serial number on the inside of a section, often the bottom one. If the sticker is gone, a photo of the outside, the inside and the end of a section helps a company identify it.

Can you fix a dent yourself?

A small, shallow dent near the middle of a steel section often can be. With the door closed, hold a block of wood against the dent from inside the garage and tap the block with a rubber mallet, lightly at first. Auto body filler, sanded and painted, hides what’s left.

Leave it to a company when the dent is creased, sits on a seam or hinge, or is on the bottom section near a corner. Never unbolt anything on the bottom section: the cable brackets there hold the springs’ force.

Replace a section, or the whole door?

SituationUsual answerWhy
A small, shallow dent; the door runs smoothlyLeave it, or try the fix belowIt’s cosmetic. A dent doesn’t weaken a door that still runs straight.
A deep dent or a crease across one sectionReplace that sectionIf the same model is still made. Bring the model number from the sticker inside the door.
The bottom section is damagedReplace that section, by a companyIt holds the lift cable brackets, which are under spring tension.
Two or more sections damagedUsually a new doorPanel prices add up fast; compare with a new door before you decide.
Door over about 15 years old, or its panel no longer madeUsually a new doorA section from a different model won’t fit the hinges and seams.
A wood doorUsually a new doorNew wood rarely matches aged wood in color, fit or weight.

A useful rule from several guides: once a panel repair costs more than about half the price of a new door, the new door is the better value. See garage door replacement for sizes, insulation and prices.

Will a new panel match the rest of the door?

  • Color usually won’t, at first. Years of West Valley sun fade paint; white yellows and darker colors fade unevenly. A new section from the factory often looks brighter than the sections beside it. The usual fix is repainting the whole door with an exterior acrylic latex paint.
  • Your HOA may care. Many West Valley HOAs set garage door colors. Check before you repaint, and ask for the approved paint color by name.
  • Older styles may be discontinued. Much of the West Valley was built in the 2000s, and some builder-grade door styles from then are no longer made. Ask the company to confirm a matching section exists before it books a visit.

If a car hit the door

Check the door with the list at the top of this page before you use it again. Take photos and get a written quote. If your own car did it, ask your insurer whether auto or homeowners coverage applies before you book the repair.

What to ask before you hire

  • Is a matching section still made for my door, and how long will it take to arrive?
  • Will the new section be painted to match, or should I plan to repaint the door?
  • Will you check the hinges, rollers, tracks and spring balance while the door is apart?
  • What will the total be, in writing, and how does it compare with a new door?
  • Is your company licensed? Check with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors at roc.az.gov.
