Emergency garage door repair in the West Valley

If your door is stuck open, hanging crooked or trapping a car you need, call a company tonight. If it’s closed and your house is secure, it can usually wait until morning, which saves an after-hours fee of about $100 to $250.

Is my garage door problem an emergency?

The question is whether your home is secure and whether anyone could get hurt before morning. Find your situation:

What’s happeningCallWhat to do now
Door stuck open after darkTonightLock the door from the garage into the house. If a spring is broken, don’t pull the red release cord to close it: the door can drop.
Door hanging crooked, or a cable snappedTonightDon’t run the opener or touch the door. Keep people, pets and cars clear; it can fall.
A car you need is trapped insideTonight, unless the springs are intactIf both springs look whole, you may be able to open the door by hand (below). If one is broken, call.
Spring snapped, door closedUsually tomorrowLeave the door shut and stop pressing the opener. If the house is secure, book the first morning visit.
Opener dead, door closedTomorrowCheck the outlet and breaker. With intact springs you can open the door by hand if you need to.
Remote or keypad stopped workingNot a repair call yetTry the wall button. If it works, replace the remote battery.

What should I do tonight while I wait?

  • Secure the house. Lock the door between the garage and the house, and move valuables out of sight.
  • Leave the springs and cables alone. They hold hundreds of pounds of tension. See broken spring repair.
  • Stop using the opener. Unplug it so nobody presses the button by habit.
  • Keep everyone clear of a crooked door, including kids and pets.

How do I get my car out if the door won’t open?

Only try this if both springs are whole. Look at the spring on the bar above the door: a gap in the coil means it’s broken, and then the door is too heavy to lift safely.

  1. Make sure the door is fully closed.
  2. Pull the red release cord down and back to disconnect the opener.
  3. With a second person, lift the door slowly from the bottom. A balanced door should stay up on its own.
  4. Once the car is out, lower the door by hand. The opener reconnects the next time it runs.

If the door feels very heavy, drops, or won’t stay up, stop and lower it. That’s a spring or cable problem.

What does emergency garage door repair cost?

Expect the normal price of the repair plus an after-hours fee of about $100 to $250 for evenings, weekends and holidays. Phoenix-area companies that publish their fees range from a flat $100 to $250. Some charge one flat emergency fee with no weekend premium, and some charge nothing extra, so ask before they come out.

What should I ask when I call after hours?

  • Is there an after-hours fee, and how much?
  • What will the total be, including parts?
  • If parts aren’t on the truck, can you at least close and secure the door tonight?
  • What’s your arrival window?
  • What’s your ROC license number? You can check it at roc.az.gov.
